At Taihape on Thursday night, at a little before 10 o'clock, a melee took place opposite the Chinese fruiterer's shop, adjoining Mr McCormick's premises in Ilautapu Street. It appears that the Chinese owner of the shop, with three of his countrymen, were seated in a back room, when th« "tell-tale" attached to the till was heard to ring. Wong You made a dart for the- shop, but the would-be robber made good his exit before the owner could see him. On gaining the door, the Chinaman fast a hurried look both ways, the only person within view being a man on the roadway, standing within a few feet of the shop. On being accused by the Chinaman of his guilt, the man stoutly maintained his innocence. The Chinaman closed with him, when his mate came to his assistance. A fierce encounter followed. Wong You wad reinforced by a countryman and the Celestials were quickly repulsed. There was no money abstracted from the till, the sounding of the "tell-tale" having evidently interfered with the man's plans. It is said that the police have no evidence to justify an arrest — News.
