A two-day Workshop on resources and assistance available at the National Library of New Zealand for researching Chinese New Zealand families, and on the preservation and conservation of records and photographs of Chinese families and community organizations will be held in the Conference Room of the National Library of New Zealand on Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 February, from 9.30 am to 5 pm each day.
The aims of the Workshop are to introduce members of the Chinese community to the resources and assistance available at the National Library of New Zealand on Chinese New Zealand history, and to the Alexander Turnbull Library and its key staff. The Workshop will also provide an opportunity for Chinese people and the National Library to talk to each other about what is needed to further enhance Chinese New Zealand history and family history research by way of resources and guides.
Some highlights of the two-day Workshop will include:
?Guided tours to various sections of the Alexander Turnbull Library.
?A session on using oral history to record family memories.
?A clinic, to be conducted by Jocelyn Cumming, the Manager of the National Library’s National Preservation Office on how to organize and conserve family and organizational documents, archives, and photographs.
?A discussion led by the National Library of New Zealand Research Fellow for 2004, Henry Chan, on Chinese language sources and how to access them.
?A number of Chinese community and family historians have been invited to talk about how they have gone, or going, about their research and how they have used resources available in New Zealand.
