36 OTHERS FINED £2 EACH. '<'Thirty-seven Chinese/ appeared in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. J. 'W. Poynton, S.M. 1 on, charges arising out of a police raid at 57, Lorn© Street, last Sun-, day- The principal accused was Chow Gow, aged 68, who was charged with ha ing kept a common, gaming house, while the following men wera charged with having been found on the premises:-—Ahi Low, Chung, Yuen Sing, Ah Wing, Ah Fow, Ah: Gee, Ah Wong, Ah Yack, Ah Jim, Wong-Sun, ,Ah Ghit, 'Ah Wah, Ah Cheong, Lip Guey, Wong Wee, Sang, Ah Mong, Ah Hoi, Ah Shu, Kwong Duck, Wong Ton, Ah Wong, Ng Gsq Tim, Ah Yee, Wong, Ah Bing, Jack, Low Kwan, Ah Long, Ah Wing, Ah Hin, Wong Yin, Joe Mee, Ah Jim, Sing, Ah Joe. The j ages of the accused ranged from 69 to 14, while most" of the men were young. Mr: i L. K. Munro, who appeared for.:: all the j Chinese, entered a plea of guilty. -Detective Mcllveney said that for the; lust three months the premises had been under observation vat intervals ■by Detective Meiklejohn and Constablei:poet,; It had 3 bean', discovered that fail tan, haing gow,;, arid ma chuck were played there, and r that large sums of money passed while the games were in progress. The premises were entered by Senior■ Detective Cummings and 14 4 policemen. Haing gow and fan tan were being played, while there, was material for playing ma chuck, i. arid for a pakapoo lottery.' Chow Gow had £59 la in his i possession, arid the others had sums from £19 downwards. He had a lease of the place, and paid £30 a month for it. .Many of:the accused were very young, only' youths, and it was only a matter of time before they would become inveterate gamblers. Counsel for the defence said the keeper of the premises was an old mart, who had oo previous convictions. The others were all sober,'industrious men, working for six days 'out of the week. They' were strangers in a strange i land, and it'was natural, .perhaps excusable, for them to indulge in a: little gambling. They might; have been more harmfully employed. The gambling was not attended by quarrelling, ana Englishmen!:; were not/inveigled to I the place, while the amounts for which they gambled were not large. Some of the money found was• v not being used for gambling. Counsel contended that accuseds' actions were not/ more' harmful than what Englishmen in China would do on one day in the week: when they did not know what to do.
.The magistrate 1 imposed a Bentenoo of throe -months?- imprisonment on Chow Qow. The others wer© each fined £2 and costa, a penalty which, Mr. Poynton said, he purposelyjinade not heavy.
