Is there anywhere I can find photos/story of fire? Interested in Dannevirke as as husbands GGGF started off there in the early 1920s, before heading to Raetihi
Only just saw this thread again. The Dannevirke Evening News was the paper at the time so maybe Dvke Library. They have a lot of papers on fiche there. There were about four or five shops about the middle of High Street that were affected. I cant recall whether Wongs re-opened when the shops were rebuilt. The site is approximately where Shires Fruit and Veg is now. There was also a Chinese Laundry which was Yees which was a couple of blocks away from the fruit shop. The fire was early to mid 1960's

FRACAS IN STREET HINDUS AND CHINESE RIVAL FRUITERERS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DANNEVIKKE. Saturday A clash occurred shortly after eleven o'clock last night between rival Chinese and Hindu fruiterers, whose business premises are situated close together, in the main business area. It is alleged that the trouble was caused by the wiping of fruit prices off the window of the Chinese shop as rivals were proceeding homewards last night. The Chinese set a watch, and as the result of what happened several Hindus and Chinese subsequently engaged in a pitched battle, during which two combatants, one on each side, crashed through a plate-glass window of a shop in the vicinity, the Chinese receiving slight head injuries and the Hindu a cut wrist. There is every probability that the battle, which apparently ended in a draw, will be reviewed shortly in Court.
