ASIASTIC MENACE WOMEN LIVING WITH CHINESE
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") I AUCKLAND, This Day. That canvassing was being carried out in Auckland Province for young Maori women to accept employment in Chinese market gardens was a statement made at a meeting of the Akarana Maori Association. A report was made to the meeting on the results, of some of the inquiries made by the association in its eSorts to eliminate the Asiatics menace. Representatives of several of the chief portions of the province attended tho meeting, reporting on the inquiries made. Mr. George Graham, the president, said that in the Asiatic cultivations near Auckland at the present time at least 54 young Maori women were living in Chinese quarters. "In the past twelve months we have had brought before our notice eleven definite cases of unfortunate results where young Maori women have consorted with Chinese," Mr. Graham went on to say. Mr. Graham voiced the concern of the investigators in the discovery that agents appeared to be visiting Maori homes in country districts trying to induce young women to obtain employment with Chinese. It was pointed out that the drift of young Maori women into such employment was due to some extent to economic pressure, but there was now a sinister aspect in the efforts to induce young women, to leave their home settlements. Supporting representations.it has already made to the Government 'on the problem, the association decided that the only remedy was the complete prohibition of the Asiatic as an immigrant io New_ Zealand, and a policy tending to eliminate the Asiatic as an clement in the Dominion's population. MAORI WOMENFOLK. EMPLOYED BY ASIATICS. COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY. ACTION BY GOVERNMENT. FIRST SITTING TO-DAY, A committee, which has been appointed by the Government to investigate the employment of Maori girls and women by Chinese and Indians in Auckland, commenced its sittings this morning at the offices of the Health Department in Anzac Avenue. Without publicity, the committee has been set up in response to requests by members of the native race, following disclosures which have been made in the Press and otherwise during the past year or so in Auckland. The proceedings arc in private, and are under the chairmanship of Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer of health, with whom are associated Mr. W. Slaughter, representing the Labour Department, and Mr. Tukere Te Anga, representing the Native Department. Preliminary evidence is being heard by the committee, to-day, and the proceedings will continue to-morrow and 011 Saturday. In its order of reference the committee is empowered to make thorough investigations into the question of Maori girls and women being employed by Chinese as workers in market gardens, and by Indians in fruit shops and elsewhere. The committee is asked to suggest in its report to the Minister of Native Affairs remedies that may be required. The scope of the inquiry will embrace questions such as wages, health, housing and general health and sanitary conditions. The question as to whether it is in the interests of public morality that Maori womenfolk should be so employed will also be reported on by the committee. Among those who will give evidence will be a number of members of the Akarana. Maori Association, which organisation has taken a prominent part in asking for an investigation. Opportunity for hearing Chinese and other Asiatics will also be provided, and the committee will make a comprehensive tour of districts around Auckland where Maori girls and women are employed by Asiatics. MAORI WOMEN. WORK FOR CHINESE IN MARKET GARDENS. VICIOUS SYSTEM ATTACKED. GOVERNMENT'S INACTION. Strong criticism of the conditions under which Maori women work on Chinese farms was expressed at a meeting of the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce last evening. "The way in which Maori women are working for Chinese is disgusting," said Mr. W. A. Cairns. "It is the duty of citizens to see that this vicious state of affairs is eliminated. At present Maoris have no avenue of obtaining employment and are forced to earn their living by working in Chinese gardens." Mr. D. Wily: The Maori race is one to be proud of and it is high time some drastic steps were taken in this matter. Mr. W. J. Nicholson, chairman of the Papatoetoe Town Board, said that to add weight to representations the chamber could collect data from the Akarana Association. It was decided to obtain the necessary data before the next meeting of the chamber, and to take all the steps in its power towards improving the conditions. CHINESE AND MAORIS. CONDITIONS IN THAMES. NO CAUSE TOR COMPLAINT FOUND. DISPUTES OVER PEASTICKS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. Statments made in the House- of Representatives by Sir Apirana Ngata concerning Maori girls, working for Chinese market gardeners, living under immoral conditions, have been found by investigations made by a 'reporter and by social workers to be incorrect in so far as the Thames district is concerned. There have been Maori girls working for Chinese gardeners in both Thames and Kirikiri during the tomato season, but invariably they have been accompanied in the fields by parents, and escorted home to the pas. The Maoris appear satisfied with the wages agreements with Chinese, but are at variance with them over contracts for the supply of peasticks and tomato stakes, of which Thames supplies most of those used in the Chinese gardens in Auckland suburbs. These are procured by Maoris and sold by the Chinese to their compatriots on commission, and the amount of the commission usually has caused disputes. Otherwise, both races are working harmoniously.
