Tribute to Jean Shum Author: Peggy Meachen
The members of the Monday afternoon Craft Group of the Island Bay Community Centre wish to express their sadness that Jean Shum our dear friend and mentor has passed away.
Jean joined the new Craft Group Dianne Sweet started at the new Island Bay Community Resource Centre in July 1988.
Jean took over the Craft Group as a volunteer when Dianne resigned owing to work commitments and stayed in charge for some 19 years or so – until her recent illness at the remarkable age of 86 years.
Over the years Jean endeared herself to the various people who came to the centre, group members, the centre staff and volunteers. Her craft work was of high standard and an inspiration. She loved variety so kept members happy trying new skills and ideas. Jean was quiet, patient and caring, generous with praise and sharing craft materials as well as items from their garden. Jean would remember friends who had left the group with beautiful, handmade birthday cards. Her Pandam cake at festivities was famous and sort after.
We will miss Jean’s presence from the Craft Group, her legacy for us is that there is still enthusiasm and friendships still happening, we have Jean to thank for that. Deborah Lindsay 28/07/2011

To all of Jean's Family,
My heart feels your loss and emptiness, it never really goes away, but time does heal eventually! Whenever I feel sad I remember various occasions of family get-togethers and what love and happiness my Mum projected into the world and it makes me feel happy and proud to be her Daughter!
I know you can all do the same when you think of all those special times you spent with Jean, she was a beautiful lady who loved her family very much and enjoyed spending cherished moments with you all! So don't be sad, remember all those great times and how lucky you were to have Jean in your life.
Sorry we cannot be there with you in body but we are in spirit, love to you all and a huge hug for my friend Marina.

To Jeans family,
Condolences at this time.
I only met Jean a few times, at the Island Bay Community centre, crafting with the ladies. She was very sweet, and I was so glad to see her after her stroke.
I will always remember her amazing "green" cake.
Regards, Gisele
