A JOKE THAT MISSED CHINAMAN DEPENDS SHOP AGAINST INTRUDERS (By Telegraph
HAWERA, This Day. The Stars Patea correspondent telegraphs that the peace of Patea was disturbed at about 11 o'clock last night by the sound of discharging firearm It appears that Wong, a fruiterer in Egmont street, when retiring to bed, heard sounds of a back window opening and shortly after he heard the footsteps of two men within the building. Wong loaded his revolver and went to the door of the room whence the sounds came. It was all in darkness, and he called out two or three times "Hands Up," but there was no response to his demand. Wong then fired at the floor, and again challenged, with the same result. He again fired, and this time he hit one of the intruders, in the leg. The other was not wounded, and made a hasty exit. The wounded man came to Wong, who was keeping him covered, and switched on the light in the shop. H« ordered the man off the premises. The wounded man is now in hospital, The affair seems to started at a joke to frighten Wong, .
