Six individuals from Asian Australian backgrounds tell their stories, of their family history.
Directed by Annette Shun Wah and William Yang - Stories East and West, is on for one night only Monday 3rd May, at the Belvoir St Theatre and is performed by the Sydney based not-for-profit organisation, Performance 4a.
With roots in China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Australia these six storytellers come together to share their histories exploring the relationship they have with their ancestors and their cultural heritage, and how this impacts on their lives today. The production developed from a series of workshops conducted by William Yang.
William Yang is a director, photographer and performer. Since 1989 he has been performing monologues with image projection and music in the theatre. His pieces tend to be autobiographical and they explore themes of marginalisation looking at subjects like Australian Chinese families and members of the gay and Indigenous communities.
Annette Shun Wah , President of Performance 4a is well known as a writer, actor, director and producer. She is fourth-generation Chinese Australian.
Mary Tang - In "Stories East and West", Mary chronicles her journey from being an unwanted daughter to an award-winning poet. Born in British Hong Kong, Mary arrived in Sydney on Australia Day 1967 when overnight, English became her new language. Descended from a long line of illiterate women, Mary now writes poetry in English and Chinese. Mary teaches Chinese Calligraphy as a volunteer tutor for the University of the Third Age. After two bouts of cancer, Mary is in remission and is working on her memoir.
Performance 4a is a Sydney-based not-for-profit organisation that has been staging performances in Australia, Singapore and China since 2002. Their work discusses the links between Australia and Asia in contemporary culture.
