ALLEGED THIRD DEGREE SAMOAN CHINESE THE VICTIM. SUVA, December 21. A Chinese coolie named Chan Sang, who has been chased all over the coun- try near Apia for months as one charged with being accessory to the murder of two girls at Lotopa last April, has been, unanimously found "not guilty" by judge and assessors. During the trial the counsel for accused stated that Chan had been knocked down in his cell by a police officer, stunned so that his hearing was affect- ed, and given a black eye, and kept without food for a while, so that hun- ger might make him obedient, and also that a statement obtained by the police was useless and absolutely un- true. The accused said not one word of the statement was true, and what he was told was in the statement was quite different to what he was said to have signed. The Crown Prosecutor denied any suggestion of third degree and any assault by the police. In face of the verdict it Is held that a searching inquiry should be held by the New Zealand Government.
