Unbeaten Lowe wins fifth national title By NZPA 18 views
DUNEDIN
Auckland's Robert Lowe yesterday won his fifth national Gold and Silver Mallets croquet championships title in Dunedin yesterday.
Lowe, 52, a journalist with the New Zealand Press Association, was unbeaten with 14 wins out of 14 at Forbury Park.
Dunedin's Anthony Ritchie was runner-up with 11 wins with William Rush from Nelson was third on eight wins.
Lowe beat Rush 26-0 and Ritchie 26-10 yesterday to gain his fifth national title.
Lowe, the fifth-ranked New Zealand player, went into the competition as the top seed.
"There was a bit of pressure because I had to justify myself," Lowe told the Otago Daily Times.
The event counts towards world rankings, and Lowe's should improve from 27th. Ritchie is ranked in the top 100.
Final placings: Robert Lowe (Auckland) 14 wins (7 triple peels) 1, Anthony Ritchie (Dunedin) 11 wins (3 triple peels) 2, William Rush (Nelson) 8 wins (3rd on hoops) 3, Nairn Smith (Dunedin) 8 wins, 4, Colin Browne (Dunedin) 5 wins 5.

Robert Lowe, an Auckland journalist, represented New Zealand in the 2004 Trans Tasman and played in the world championships in Cheltenham last year. He has won the NZ Doubles, the NZ Mixed Doubles and the North Island Open singles, and rates his two Arthur Ross national handicap titles as being particular highlights.Away from the lawns, his interests include soccer, Mozart and bossa nova.''
