FAN TAN PLAYERS.
(Per Press Association) NAPIER, this day. The police last night raided the premises of a Chinese fruiterer, Lim Hoy, in Hastings street, and "arrested sixteen out of seventeen Celestials engaged in playing fan tan, or watching the progress of the game. Elaborate precautions were taken by the police to ensure cormplete capture, and only one escaped. The capture was effected just as people were leaving 'church, and the unusual sight of sixteen Chinese maching under police surveillance' to the station attracted a tremendous crowd. The Chinese concerned in the fan-tan raid appeared at the Court this morning, Lim Hoy being charged with permitting his premises to be' used' as a common gaining house, and the others with being found on the premises. The cases were adjourned till the afternoon.
