Chinese coastal trade started shortly after and in 1883 a regular service to Australia was initiated. Most of the company's ships were seized by Japan in 1941 and services did not resume until 1946. Pilgrim services to Mecca and cruising started in 1960 and in 1974 China Navigation Co. became known as part of the Swire Group. By 2000 the company still owned 12 ships which traded worldwide
