DARING THEFT STEEL SAFE STOLEN CHINESE LOSE £B3O IN CASH (P.A.) AUCKLAND, .Jan. 9. A small steel safe containing about £B3O in notes and silver and cheques to the value of about £BO was stolen from Chinese premises at Grey’s Avenue early this morning. The safe is believed to have been carried out of the front door, which opens on to the street, and loaded on to the hack of a motor truck while several Chinese were asleep in the building. The premises, which at one time were used as a shop, are next door to the Chungking Cafe, and a pathway with a wooden gate at its entrance runs between the two buildings. It is thought that the thieves carried a step ladder from the back of the restaurant and used it to enter by an unlocked side window about 10ft above the pathway. They then entered a room on the ground floor and removed the safe, which was locked and was standing, on the floor. They took it through the front door, which could be unlocked from the inside, and placed it on the vehicle. All the money, with the exception of about £IOO, was the property of Guy On, and the remainder belonged to another Chinese, Lee Chong. paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD19460110.2.121?items_per_page=10&page=8&query=chinese+cafe&snippet=trueEVENING STAR, ISSUE 25687, 10 JANUARY 1946
