LOCAL CELESTIALS FAREWELL PRIVATE J . WESTON.
A unique farewell to a local soldier, Private Jaines Weston, took place last night. In the course of. liis civilian employment as a carrier and shipping agent, Private Weston came- a great deal into contact with, the Chinese traders in this town. . Mr W. Tan at, the excellent dinner, which had been prepared by Mr Andrew Hudson, who is an expert Chinese chef. Tli© menu consisted of several varieties of Chinese soups, followed by curried fish, smoked oysters, from China with Chinese vegetables,, and in addition there were Chinese salads, including a salad) made with mushrooms and the tasty meal was topped off with rice and Chinese sweets. s Mr Tan, Mr Jim Lee, and Mr Andrew Hudson all supported the toast of private Weston’s health, paying him splendid tributes as to the careful manner in which he had always handled! all business entrusted to him. They trusted that the Allies would succeed in crushing the Huns soon and that Private Weston ivould be able to return to Gisborne by Christmas and it was their intention to give... him a welcome home again. . , , Private Weston suitably replied, declaring that lie was delighted with the honor which had- been done him that evening. Mr W. Madheison, on behalf of the European guests, thanked the Celestials for their hue hospitality.
