A CHINAMAN ASSAULTED
John Murray, one of the principal actors outside tho Chinese laundry ohop iu Ward street, on Saturday night last, appeared again at the Hamilton I'olice Court, this morning, before Mr IC. Rawson, S.M., charged with wilfully damaging a pane of glass valued at 4i7 15s, the property of Veo Lee. Murray and James Mclntee were further charged with assaulting How dice. Mr J. Wyndham Hopkins apeared lor the accused, who pleaded not guilty.
Sergt. llastie said that on the night of April 12th, about 10 p.m,, Murray, with two other young men, was making for the railway station to catch the train to Matangi. Murray eiitced the shop and asked for his washing. Yee Let* asked him for his ticket, hut the young man replied that he bad none. He then threw a few parcels of laundry articles about, and picking up a Japanese mat and went out with it, Yee Lee went after him, whereupon Murray threw the mat at him. A tew minutes atferwurds there was a crash of breaking glass and the window went The harassed chinaman once more rushed out, accompanied by u fellow countryman named How Chee, and the two of them followed the young men down to the railway station. Yee Lee asked Murray not to go away till a policeman hud been consulted about the broken window. Murray replied: “You go away or I'll break your head, A general melee followed, as a result of which one Chinaniiia was taken to the hospital in an unconscious slate.

Witness was severely cross-axamined by Mr Hopkins regarding bis statement that ho was struck on the wrist by Murray with a bottle, the result being that the boltle (low to pieces and one p cco hit him on the
