In the course of an interview with Chinese in Otaki, the Mail elicited the fact that the gardening season so iar has been somewhat unprofitable, and that many seeds, owing to the dampness of the ground, have failed to germinate as in previous years. Consequently, the number of Celestials in Otaki and its surrounding country at the present time is much below the ordinary, and many gardens were found to be even untenanted, while in other places only a stray Chinese or so could be found. At present the Celestials have about 116 acres under cultivation, for which they pay from £3 to £8 per acre rent. Ohinemuri Gazette, Volume XX, Issue 2558, 15 October 1909, Page 2
