"I was much surprised, however, to discover that nearly the, whole of the retail fruit trade is practically a monopoly of tho Chinese, and that the distribution of vegetables seems to be in their hands as well. In South Australia a Chinese retail fruiterer would receive very short shrift in deed and it may be news to the people there to learn that so efficiently do the Europeans grow vegetables, that tho Chinese hawkers purchase seven eighths of their supplier from the European growers, showing very clearly that when the European sets himself tho task and is willing to work, he can outclass the Celestial. Our system of distribution, too, is different to yours. In Adelaide we have three, very fine markets, each capable of accommodating 300 four wheeled trucks from which tho fruit and produce is sold wholesale or retail to any person wishing to buy, dispensing all together the middle man and overcoming the possibility of a ring cornering the supply. paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=CHP19070413.2.11&srpos=47&e=-------100-CHP-1----0chinese+fruiterer-- Press, Volume LXIII, Issue 12777, 13 April 1907, Page 5
