Writes our Carterton correspondent: —Here is an example of the enterprise of the Chinese trader. For years, until recently, only one Celestial had carried on a store business here, and a few months ago the lease, so I understand ran out. As the shop, and site was a portion of a deceased's perons's estate, it was to be placed upon the market to wind up the estate. The Chinese occupant, evidently fearing that he would not be able to secure a, renewal of the lease of the premises—which is one of the best business sites in the town—obtained a lease of premises further along the street. The building and opened, the leasee's "cousin" (according to the Celestial all the Chinamen" are cousins) was put in charge. After the sale the Chinese trader managed to renew his old lease, and ran the two businesses. A few months ago a, Wellington firm of Chinamen commenced business at the southern end of the town, and now the foreigner, who has been trading here for a lengthy period, lias purchased their interest in the business, and put another "couisn" in charge. Thus, the one trader runs the three shops, situated at the north, middle, and Hβ. south end of the town. There is a vacant shop in the Borough, and a Chinaman lias already been after it, but the landlord has"refused "Chow" tenants. Wairarapa Daily Times, Volume LVI, Issue 8684, 18 February 1907, Page 4
