A RUSH ORDER.
COMFORTS FOR WARSHIPS.
VEGETABLES AND FRUIT. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. Good service, on the part of the National Patriotic Fund Board was performed in the case of the provision of comforts for a warship on a Saturday. It had been on duty in tropical waters, and the board was advised that green vegetables and fruit would be very acceptable. An Army truck was forthwith requisitioned, and despite the fact thatit was a Saturday, a tour was made of the market gardens in the Hutt Valley. The labour problem was solved by 6ome willing family co-operation. One garden produced 31 cases of cabbage, ten cases of cauliflower, another 15 cases of lettuce, and 100 cucumbers and 3301b hothouse tomatoes were bought. No stone fruit was obtainable in the valley, but this was solved by a Chinese fruiterer. When he knew the fruit was wanted for sailors, he parted with 20 cases of apri' cots, seven of peaches and te.n of plums. I All was aboard ship by nine o'clock that I night. I A letter subsequently received from the comrriander conveyed the thank 6 of tli? officers and the ship's company. Auckland Star, Volume LXXII, Issue 21, 25 January 1941, Page 11
