To Doreens family
We were saddened to hear of Doreens passing. I now know why I didn't hear from her on the 18th as always.
Don's association goes back many years to your parents, he served his time at Horrie Youngs motorcycle shop with Don in their young years and also played up together many years ago We have always kept in touch and visited High Street many times, also the townhouse at Aroha and then her lovely room with all the grandchildrens photos.
I thank her and Albert's mum for all the cooking tips they gave me.
May she rest in peace such a lovely lady, we will miss our visits.
Sorry ill health prevented us from attending to farewell Doreen.
God Bless Don and Ruth Hathaway - Ngawi Jean Ngan 21/06/2012
Dear Doreen,
I'll always remember your smile and generosity. Always giving.
When the children were small, the wonderful parties and fantastic food that we shared in the High Street home, they were legend. What a great cook. Especially the pork buns!
Recently I've enjoyed having our chats about the "old" days.
We will miss you Doreen, but I know you are with Albie, Alison, Ma and your Mum.
All our love,
Jean and Guy Marion Cosgrove 21/06/2012

The Ngan Family,
Please accept our family condolences in the passing of Doreen.
Our family owned market gardens in Park Avenue and supplied Albert with fresh vegetables for many years. While the relationship started as a business one it quickly developed into a firm friendship - including with some of your extended family.
Our relationship was of course mainly with Albert but I remember Doreen as a warm presence - supplying an initial impetus to me to learn just a few words of Chinese. They were very helpful in my liaison (as a young boy) with other vegetable buyers at the markets! - getting me a double Yum Cha on occasion - and in being able to ask for a fish when going with Albert to his Makara fishing boat to pick up fish for Peter Zhou's fish shop at Park Ave.
My mother Joyce now 91 also wishes me to convey her regards also.
If any of you are into family history records we have some stories around Albert that we would be pleased to share. ( Phone 04 233 0123)
Best wishes Ross Whitcher and the Whitcher family Andrea Hall (Street) 20/06/2012
Dearest Doreen,
I have such fond memories of visiting your house regularly often with my late father ( Bryan Street) or with Beverley. You were the most amazing cook always cooking up a yummy storm. And to this day Chinese is my Favourite!
It was so lovely to catch up with you again recently when Bev brought you down to the Mall on a shopping trip and to see your lovely smiling face.
My Deepest Sympathy To Kevin, Bev, Gill, Allan & Families.
Rest in peace Doreen

To my dearest Aunty Doreen
I will always treasure the special memories of the times we shared. You were always such a generous caring person.
We used to look forward to you and Uncle Albie coming to visit us in Taumarunui.
You're now reunited with your loved ones. Say hi to my Dad, Uncle Albie, Ma and Alli for me.
I will never forget you and the love you always showed us.
Rest peacefully until we meet again x The Lee Family 19/06/2012
We're still in shock you're gone. You were always so friendly and welcoming everytime we saw you at Aroha. You really helped my Dad/husband settle in at Aroha, always willing to lend a helping hand.
Your dear smile will be missed.
Rest in peace. With love, The Lee family Tracey Wynne 19/06/2012
To the Ngan family
We had the great pleasure of being neighbours to the Ngan family on High Street in Avalon for many many years.
Doreen and Albert were the best neighbours you could ever wish for. My children loved trick or treating every year as both Doreen and Albert would make such a fuss of them when they knocked on the door. They were always asking how the kids were and what were they doing with their lives. So kind!
Their High Street house was immaculate not a twig or blade of grass out of place, just perfect!
Albert had a love of old cars and motorbikes and was always taking the old cars out fora Sunday drive. My husband Shane was so envious of his enormous garage. They took pride in their house and loved their children who visited often.
Doreen and Albert are both missed, please accept our condolences.

A great Aunty to the Lum children.
How do you say goodbye to a loved one on their birthday, a day that will never be forgotten.
Goodbye Aunty Doreen you will be sadly missed by many. We will always treasure the memories of growing up and the happy times we shared as families. The holidays we took in Wellington in our Zephyr and your visits to Taumarunui in your Mercedes always made us feel special. Mum & Dad always looked forward to seeing you and enjoying family time together and not to forget our great meals we shared.
We have all gone our separate ways but our families will always be close at heart.
When we last saw you at Heather's it was a special night, one that will be with us forever.
We are also saying goodbye to Goong's sister, who was the last survivor of the Joe Lum journey that began from China to NZ back in the early 1900’s. The end of a great era, but the name Lum will carry on.
The time has come for you to be with Uncle Albert & Allison once again, a dream come true.
We are sure that Frankie & Ma will be happy that you have now joined them. Imagine that kitchen in the sky, maa faa clouds everywhere.
May your new journey be as beautiful as you were and how your life was.
All our love and God Bless

Your mother was so caring to my mum, Rose at Aroha. I just wanted you to know how much I respected Doreen. I remember her and your Dad when they had the shop at what is now Queensgate. Always a wonderful smile. I often used to wonder what it must have been like for your Mum coming to this country as a young woman. New Zealand was blessed your parents chose this country.
Please accept sincere sympathy from the O'Connor family.

Dear Aunty Doreen,
You have been a part of my life ever since I could remember. You were always there making us feel so welcome when we came to the Hutt for a visit. Your wonderful peanut cookies, and all those other yummy goodies which were always ready in the tins for us. I remember the wonderful childhood days at your place in High Street playing with Kevin, Allison Brenda, Beverley, Lance Andrew, Gillian, Allen.
You always were cheery and welcoming and positive. I especially admired you for your care and devotion to Grandma all those years, and when she got sick. Later you showed the same devotion to Uncle Albert too. You are a wonderful role model for all of us.
I am sure sister Margie has the same thoughts as me also.
Till we meet again.

To dear Aunty Doreen,
We will miss you a lot. Especially your welcoming smile, your interest in how we are and what the kids have been doing, your kindness to us whenever we saw you, your wonderful cooking. I think back to all the family gatherings at High St - the kids, the food, the mah jong, and you at the centre.
We were so lucky to have you all this time. Be at peace now with Albie.
All our love,
Liz, Chris, Rachel & Shaun x Joanne Lum 19/06/2012
To Dear Aunty Doreen,
I can't believe you have gone. I thought you would live forever. You were so kind to us when we were growing up & when you came to visit it was like xmas every time. From taking us out to Cobb & Co for dinner to cooking such yummy meals with Dad. It was great to see you both in the kitchen fussing over how to cook a dish. Whatever the result it always tasted fantastic.
Say hi to Dad, Allison & Uncle Albie & not forgetting Ma also. I am sure they are all happy to have you there with them.
I will never forget the great times we shared together as a family & those are the thoughts that I shall keep with me about you.
Much love Aunty Dor. xxx Stuart Wong 18/06/2012
Today we have lost one of the world's wonderful mums.
Doreen was the best mum anyone would want to have which luckily I have been part of. She was a loving and caring wife to the late Albert whom I have always respected and admired. She was the best cook when it came to baking, the best knitter (my girls will miss those bright colourful cardigans that money could not ever buy).
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Who could ask for more. Memories will be forever in our hearts. Not only I will miss you, but those who knew Doreen will miss her too.
Now you are with dad, together again like the old days. Rest in peace. Till we meet again.
