ASSAULT ON CHINESE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) SIATAMATA, Thursday. John Gratton and C. Stewart, at the Slagi-trate's Court, were charged to-day with causing wilful damage to a shop occupied by Wing Lee, Chinese fruiterer. Gratton was further charged- with assaulting Wing Lee. Both men pleaded guilty. Constable Murphy stated that accused had drunk more beer than was good, for tliem, and had gone to the Chinaman's shop. An argument took place, and they broke fouc 'windows and damaged the stock. The men 'previously had excellent characters. Counsel for accused said they disputed the weight of apples they had bought, and insisted on inspecting the scales. The Chinaman took not notice. Both had received injuries in the war, and were greatly excited by drinking. The magistrate said that had the defendants been -civilians 'he would have sent them to gaol. Gratton was fined £5 and Stewart £2 10/. Both men were prohibited, and ordered to pay damages, £10. Auckland Star, Volume L, Issue 259, 31 October 1919, Page 7
