MAGISTRATES COURT.
LEVIN—THURSDAY. (Before Mr 12. Page, S.M.) ASSAULTED A CHINAMAN. A young man named William Wilson, a .Maori, was charged with assaulting Oil Tail, a Chinese fruiterer, on May 17, by striking liilim on the lioad with a metal weight. Constable Bagrie prosecuted and stated tha,t on the night in question defendant entered the shop and asked for a packet of cigarettes. The Chinaman asked lor the money first and apparently defendant resented this. The Cliiuanian then came round the counter to put 'him out when defendant picked up the weight and threw it. inflicting a wound on the Chinamans' head. Defendant stated that on the night in question he walked in and asked for the cigarettes' and the Chinaman wanted for the money first. Another man came in and took some bananas and the Chinaman came round and attacked defendant with a stick. His Worship said this was a matter that, could not overlooked. He had the power to Inflict imprisonment, but he would not do that Horowhenua Chronicle , 12 June 1919, Page 3
