POTATO PRICES CHARGES TOO HIGH
For selling potatoes at a .greater price than that permitted by the price ?ontrol regulations greengrocers were fined by Mr. A. M. GouWmg, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. They were Poy Chew. Young, of Moxham Avenue, Hataitai, Pond Young, of Lambton Quay, Raymond Lowe, of Moxham Avenue, and Tse Lai Hong, trading as Sam.Kee, Upland .RoadKelburn, who were each fined £7.10s and George Wong Pang, of Riddiford Street, Newtown, who was fined £4. The case-for the prosecution, which was conducted by Mr. W.. R. Birks, on behalf of the Price Investigation Tribunal, was that George Wong Pang sold Price Tribunal inspectors potatoes at two and a half pounds for 6d, and the others sold them at 3d a pound, at the end of June and the beginning of July when the maximum retail Spice permitted by the regulations was da pound. The potatoes were bought by the defendants at 13s 6d and 14s a hundredweight. They were South Island potato.es. Mr, -H Mitchell entered pleas of not guilty, for all the defendants. He called no evidence, but submitted that there was-no case to answer, because the prosecution had not proved what price "was paid per pound of potatoes and had-not proved, in. , what area the potatoes had been- bought by the in: spectors.'
