An incipient fire was discovered at 1 o'clock yesterday in the fancy goods shop of Mr James Ah Kew, Queen-street. Mr J. Morey, the custodian of the Victoria Arcade, was passing on his way home from church, when he noticed smoke coming out of the building. In company with Mr Farquhar Macrae and Mr Coomb, Railway Engineer, he entered the premises, and in a few moments they put an end to all danger. They did not raise any alarm, consequently the Fire Brigade was not called out. Mr Harley, foreman of the Brigade, arrived shortly afterwards, and he informed Superintendent Hughes and Captain Field, who both subsequently examined the premises. The cause of the fire ;Was apparent. An employee of Mr Ah Kew was engaged washing the floor of the shop, and as it was dark he had a candle on the floor. Some papers overhanging from an adjacent shelf took fire, and thus the flames were communicated to the woodwork. When the fire was discovered the boards were just breaking out into flames. Little damage wae done excepting to the shelving. Constable Martyn was early on the scene and also rendered assistance. Auckland Star, Volume XX, Issue 178, 29 July 1889, Page 2
