The Local Chinaman
CAUGHT ON THE HOP-
WONG-SHING,
Opium smoking is an expensive luxury if caught by the police. Last Sunday morning our local arm of, the law (Const. Driscoll), took a walk for the good of his health out the Flat-way, when he happened along the Chinee cabbagee garden of Wong Shing at Te Pau.
Going through the residential hut and smelling around, the police noticed in the bedroom a small table laid-out in banquet fashion with, an opium smoking outfit namely, pipe, lamp and opium. The outfit was carefully taken care of by the1 man in blue, and on Monday afternoon the Wong-Shing-er, who grows cabbages for Britishers who like the almond-eyed methods, had to appear before Messrs J A Wilson and Jas. McLeod, J.P's^who, after hearing the evidence, convicted John and fined him £3 and costs, £1 t 4s 6d. Kaipara and Waitemata Echo , 3 June 1915, Page 2
