PUZZLED CHINESE.
DUNEDIN, July 16. The police explained to-day in connection with the Chinese gambling raid that they had taken action as a result of the better class of Chinamen complaining that the gambling which took place on Sundays caused the younger men, in particular, to neglect their work.
Counsel for the defendants said it had been stated that complaints had been made about the men neglecting their work through gambling on Sundays. Well, they were nearly all market gardeners, and if they worked on . Sundays they were fined. They all came to town on Sundays. "
Worship said no doubt there was' a good deal o£ force in the argument of counsel in the case of the market gardeners. If they worked in their garden on. Sunday they were prosecuted; they came' to-town and were prosecuted for gambling. It would be difficult to get the Chinese to understand law from the European standpoint. However, this was not a court of morals. Ashburton Guardian, Volume XXXVII, Issue 9046, 17 July 1917, Page 3
