Now and again m this country instances are given of the lack of a national spirit. The other clay "Truth" recorded the painful fact that a Chinaman at Stratford headed the list of Hospital Saturday subscribers, and now it is learned that at East Ohakune the other evening about eighty white trash turned up at a complimentary social given by a Chow store-keeper which was to commemorate the fact that he had been rescued fr,om the bush, m which he had been lost (some weeks ago. No doubt those while folk who turned up had a rattling good time, but it might occur to a lot of people to think, though they wouldn't say, that it might not have much mattered had the rescue never been effected NZ Truth , Issue 318, 29 July 1911, Page 4
