A Popular Chinese Resident.— At Cromwell the other day a_ somewhat unusual presentation took place, but it was well deserved all the same. Mr D. A Jolly, on behalf of the principal residents, presented Mr Woon Key, the leading Chinese storekeeper, with a gold locket. In making the presentation, Mr Jolly accompanied it with a few suitable remarks. Mr Woon Key, in replying, stated, among other things, that lie would send full particulars to his friends in Chjna. Mr Woon Key has been a much respected resident in Cromwell during the past 25 years, and' has always identified himself with the progress of the place. He gave a subscription of L2O to the Cromwell Hospital, • for which he was deservedly made a life governor. Then he got up a Chinese' concert on behalf of the Athcmeuin, which 'netted-,' the snug little sum of LIB. He is also very liberal; in subscribing to charitable objects. Every Chinese New Year he invites the principal residents of the town to a most sumptuous dinner. I would not be surprised if he sat at the council board yet.
