A mysterious affair has been reported to the police at Wanganui. An attempt was made to burn out a Chinese fruiterer who had recently opened business in the Avenue. A towel had been stuffed in the doorway, and had evidently been soaked with inflammable oil and set fire to. The oidy damage done, however, was that the door was blistered. CHARLIE LUM KEE.
Charlie Lum Kee sounds like a medley of English and Chinese, and so it is. Lum Kee is the name of the firm that does the business of grocer and fruiterer next to Abraham and Williams, Ltd., Broadway, Marton; but Charlie is greater than Lum Kee. He is " the one," and a better or more conscientious fruiterer than Charlie never handed oranges or applies over a counter. It is simply because he is so straight and gives everyone a fair deal that his fine shop has become a rendezvous for both town and country people who are seeking the freshest of fruit, vegetables or confections.. In addition to the business of a fruit dispenser, Charlie sells genuine Chinese silks and in this line of business he has clients from Wanganui and other places. Lum Kee also wishes it to be perfectly understood that he is in no way connected with the business carried on by another Chinaman further up Broadway. He hag got one shop only, and to this both he and his esteemed wife devote the whole of their attention. Lum Kee's advertisement concerning Xmas fruits, etc., appears elsewhere.
