CHINESE FRUITERERS RESENTMENT IN CHRISTCHURCH (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 21. The appearance of Chinese fruiterers in hristchurch nas given rise to a heated controversy, which has found expression once or twice in demonstrations against the elestials. Meanwhile The Chinamen certainly are helping to reduce the price of fruit which has long been more expensive in Christchurch than in Wellington or Auckland. A correspondent of the Lyttelton Times writes :— " Greengages were sold in one of our rooms lately at 251 b weight for 2s per' case, and were retailed byshops at 4d per lb ; peaches sold for-ls -and" 6d "per* case. The public know what they pay for them in the shops. Let me also say that fruit has come down in price. It is 50 per cent, cheaper to-day in the shops, simply' on account of the influence of the barrowman and the Chinaman."
