NELSON, Jamiary 13. The premises of Ngan Lee, a Chinese market gardener at Stoke, were raided and a Chinaman named Ah Ling-arrested for having opium in his possession. NELSON. Jan 13 For some time the local customs officials and police have suspected opium smoking by Chinese at Stoke. Last night the premises of Ngan Lee, a market gardener, were raided and a chinaman named Ah Sing- was arrested on .a charge of having opium, in a form suitable for smoking, m his possession. A small quantity of the drug was seized with the smoking apparatus. About eleven chinamen were found in the building which reeked of the fumes of opium. Ah Sing was found lying across a bed with his pipe in hand and a small quantity of opium. Informations have been laid against the other Chinamen found on the premises. The latter fine was light, as the material smoked ; was yen shee or ashes of opium, from "which, only two' pipefuls could be obtained. Another Chinaman, the owner of the premises} escaped on a charge of permitting opium-smoking, as, though 'caught in a dazed state, obviously from the effects of smoking, he was -not found in tha act, and the Magistrate held that a$ he was not wide awake he was probably unaware of what was going on Star , Issue 9444, 19 January 1909, Page 2
