By the amendments made in the Chinese Immigrants Act Amendment Bill in the Legislative Council, the term " Chinese not include natural born, or naturalised subjects of Her Majesty; and the term " naturalised " means"nauralised in the colony of New Zealand. The section Hunting the number of Chinese per tonnage of vessel is added to so that it does not apply to Chinese passengers who shall prove to the customs that they have left China or Hongkpng for New Zealand before the 10th day of June, 1888. Further the bill is amended not to apply to the officers or crews of any vessel or vessels of war of H.M. the Emperor of China ; and the Act is not to remain in force beyond the end of the next session of thy General Assembly. ARBIVAL OF THE TORRES STRAITS MAIL At Cooktown April 11.
The E. and A. Company's R.M.S. Bowen arrived at 6 o'clock this evening. She left Hong- kong on March 16, and arrived at Singapore on the 26th. There Bhe was detained three days awaiting the arrival of the English mails ; left Singapore on tho 29 th ; passed the company's steamer Menmuir about fifty miles west of Cape Jacki on April 4 ; arrived at Thursday Island on the Sth ; left again the following day, and shortly afterwards passed the Normanby ; arrived at Cooktown on the 11th, at Ö p.m. Experienced fine weather and light winds from Hongkong to Thursday Island ; thence to Cooktown, strong south-east breeze with heavy rain and squall thick weather, rendering navigation extremely difficult. The passengers are as follow for Sydney- Leong Sing and wife, and l8 in the steerage besides I5O Chinese ; for Melbourne-Mr. S. Davis and 21 Chinese; for New Zealand-33 Chinese.
