The accused was then sworn and said that his name was Edmund Henry MarfjttU, duly qualified medical practitioner. H^had been sleeping at the Old Empire Hotel, for the past five or six Tears. The place was taken over by Wong Sing on September 2nd, and since that time he had occasionally slept there. Mr Sing allowed him stay on for two or three weeks, but he could not find a house. They had often asked him to leave. On Saturday jveek last he went in about six o'clock, and went up to his bedroom. He saw the girl, Jessie Smith there, just as he was in the act ef emptying the pannikins at a sink outside his door. It was untrue that he dipped his finger in the pannikin and afterwards forced the contents into her mouth. Nothing more than an ordinary salutation passed between them. He saw her with the jug° in her hand as he went into his room. He left the room shortly after to go to dinner. He did not see the girl again then. The statement made by the girl was a pure fabrication. When he came in in the evening he went up to his room with a parcel. He came down sgain and went into the siUing-rom, where Mrs Sing oharged him with what had been stated, ordered him out of the house, and used very foul language. paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=WH18931002.2.24&cl=search&srpos=482&e=-------100--401----2%22wong+sing%22--&st=1 Wanganui Herald, Volume XXVII, Issue 8290, 2 October 1893, Page 2

J. N. Bing £5 ss. We may say that the liberality of the Chinese means that the institution will benefit to the extent of £44 6s 7d, which includes the Government subsidy of 24s in the £. The generous spirit manifested by our Celestial friends does them credit. Wanganui Herald, Volume XXXIX, Issue 11542, 26 April 1905, Page 5
