Who remembers this couple? Albert A Chang and Mrs Chang. Maybe you went to school with their children. Changs first shop was actually on the west side of High Street opposite where they ended up on the east side. Mr Chang was an active Rotarian but unfortunately we know little about Mrs Chang other than she seemed to spend long hours at the shop. I know one of the sons ended up in the Hutt Valley and Albert lived with them living well into his 90’s.
Motueka Historical Association From memory Changs also had a truck that went round the farms selling vegetables.

Helen Girvin I was in the maturity hospital with Esme & l was asked many times if the staff had given our babies to the wrong parents, also my father-in -law, Roy Girvin, used to grow vegetables for Mr Chang & in return get CASES OF ORANGES & LEMONADE. It was something l had never seen l think my eyes must have poped out when l saw the cases for the first time. Lovely family the Changs

Darrin Bisley Esmay and Eddie their daughter and son in law lived in Woodlands ave , helped run the store. Their sons used to play at our house when we were about 4yrs old. Debbie Saiger as well. Used to spend all my pocket money buying fire crackers from Changes. Tom thumbs, Puhas, Mighty cannons... None of the politically correct fireworks they have now. Kids supplied with explosives...should be more of it!!

KarenRon Heal When walking past Change with my father in the mornings he would tell me to walk quicker when we got to their shop only to find out that Albert always offered him a whisky (at 8.30 in morning) when he saw us. That's how he kept on right side of the bank manager lol!

Noel Lummis Albert Chang and my Dad had many a whisky together, and it didn't matter what time of the day it was either. We always shopped with them as did many other shop owners in town, it was the way you done business in those days, everyone supported each other and Motueka prospered as a result. The chang's greeted us all the same and i can never remember anything but good words said about them.

The chang's greeted us all the same and i can never remember anything but good words said about them.

Mum (Lynne McConachy nee Bloomfield) worked at the telephone exchange years before I was born, and she has said that she would sometimes put her friend's calls through to Chang's as a joke. She has always spoken very fondly of them 💗

Sonya Flanagan just showed my mother judy james. she remembers then well. her eyes lit up when i showed her. it was the first shop she went to with her mother jean james. nanna liked to talk to because she could not understand mrs chang and she would try the fruit before she brought it when the changs were not looking. lovely couple and shop.

They were in Lions together.Mrs.Chang was a sweet lady and I remember Albert helped her understand English as she struggled at times.
