At Suva, Fiji, on the 9th inst., says the Fiji Times, 140 of the Chinese in Suva proceeded to Nuknlau in order to celebrate the death of Yuan Shi Kai the recently deposed Emperor of China. ,The reason for this "mirth in funeral" is that Yuan-Shi-Kai tried to cheat the Chinese public in regard to promoting the Chinese Republic. lie sought to invest himself with the regal robes, but tho country rebelled, so he climbed down, and handed his powers over to the Chinese Cabinet, and then, as often happens to people who are obstroperous in the Celestial Empire, he very conveniently died. The opposition to Yuan-Shi-Kai •'» proposal to raise himself to Imperial honours was engineered by tho Chinese ational League-. The president of. the league was I)r Sun-Vat-Sen, and it had its headquarters in Japan. There are branches throughout the world, and the Suva branch comprises over 180 members, who recently collected a sum of £500 to advance the cause. Tho death of Yuan-Shi-Kai means , that their cause lias triumphed, and that a Chinese Republic is now assured. The Chinese /jkave, therefore, arranged to hold a big ~ ' at Nukulau, and-will drink.to the Republic in cups of sainshu, together with plenty of speech-making.
