THE ARCHES.
The Chinese Arch is situated in Princes street, a few yards north of Walker street, s showy, and in al. respects characteristic and a credit to the subscribers as well as tin designer and builder. The arch is sup ported by two towers of trellis work, 10f* squaro*at the base, and rising to a heigh* of 43ft. The height of the arch from the road to the crown is 55ft. and from thi street to the lower part of the arch 27ft The bold-ess of the towers strikes the eye and tlrnr coloring is cerlainly distinctive The exterior, of diagonal bracing, is paintr/ ye low—a very bright yellow, contrastin', fcrc bly w th the hangings of red baize in hj do. Ab *ve the trellis work on each to .vei there is a look-out room, with square windows looking each way, the window line being defined in red on a yellow ground. H ph .T still are the pointed crown-pieces, in yellow, with blue carved boards on edge motiing to and projecting beyond each cor ncr. The base of each arch in draped with evergreens, and fixed licie and there in tin. tie.lis work are a number of fans, urn breiias, and lanterns, all of Chinese put tern. The- coat-cting arch, straight under Death, and pointed on top, has a yeliov. background, with decorations in red, while and blue, and surmounted by a fern tree an., other specimens from the native bush. Th motto facing south consists simply of tin word “Welcome”; that which looks non 1 is Welcome from the Chinese citizens.' As to the lighting, Mr J. Conston ha undertaken to provide a supply of acetylcm gas, electricity not being available, and thresult is satisfactory. Mr J. Hislop de s.giifd the arch, and the contractor was Mi H. Lyders.
