ASSAULT WITH FORK CHINESE CONVICTED to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Jim Lee (19), a kitchen assistant at a Chinese restaurant, was charged with assaulting a Maori named Wawo Tarau. The complainant said that at 6 p.m. on 17th February he went to the Chinese restaurant to see a Maori woman, who was a relative of his and the wife of the Chinese. Witness asked the accused, who was in the kitchen, if he knew where the Maori woman was. Lee stated that she went away about 4.30 p.m., and told witness that he had better wait outside. Later, however, the accused invited him into the kitchen. "While there Lee jabbed witness twice with a carving fork. Cross-examined, witness denied calling Lee a "little yellow or saying that if Lee ordered him out he "would throw him into the kitchen lire. Mr. M'Kean, S.M., said it was evident that the Maori had given some provocation, and that a scuffle ensued. Lee might be a decent young Chinaman, but he must not use a fork when he quarrelled with anybody. He would tie fined £3, and ordered to pay the costs.
