New Zealand, faced with similar problems, provides an interesting contrast. There, commencing with the repeal of the Poll Tax and the annual admission of a small quota of Chinese, a generous policy has produced beneficial results. In 1947 those Chinese given sanctuary during the war, together with children born there, and many others, such as businessmen, students, and visitors who had spent upwards of five years in New Zealand were granted permanent residence. Alto- gether 1,320 Chinese were allowed to remain in New Zealand under this decision, and a small yearly quota of fresh admissions continues.
