Appo Hocton is believed to be the first Chinese Settler of New Zealand. At nine years old he left China to work on English vessels as a ship's boy. When the ship the Thomas Harrison berthed in Nelson Appo and a few others jumped ship. It was 1842. Today, Appo Hocton story is one of a group of Chinese Settlers documented in a book called Before Gold - Early Chinese Settlers in New Zealand, by Steve Austin of the Nelson and Marlborough Museum, due to be out later this year.
