Governors versus settlers : the dispute over Chinese labour in German Samoa By : Firth, Stewart In : New Zealand Journal of History, Oct 1977; v.11 n.2:p.155-179 Journal Article Abstract : Investigates the labour issues in Samoa during the time of German government and suggests that the personal philosophy of Solf and a labour shortage were the main reasons for the more humane treatment of Samoans than was experienced by the natives in other German colonies. Backgrounds the labour situation prior to and immediately after the appointment of a Governor when the German Trading and Plantation Co of Hamburg dominated the colony. Outlines the influx of German cacao planters in 1902 which exacerbated the need for labour and resulted in the importation of Chinese labourers. Details the terms on which the coolies were employed and the division between Solf and Richard Deekin, who was responsible for recruiting the Chinese labour. Examines the situation for the coolies, who had the protection of the Chinese government, and the difficulties for the smaller planters Url of this record - innz.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=8234
