in Samoa where the Chinese coolies are allowed to live with native women the Samoan race, which is supposed to be the last of the pure Polynesiai stock, is in danger of absorption. After over 30 years of this deplorable state of affairs the present Government is to be congratulatei on the step it intends to take to prevent Samoa from becoming a second.Pawaii. The planters' contention that there is np substiI trite for coolie labour is ridiculous. The Samoan is as good a worker as any coolie, as has been proved time and again. But tliey refuse to work for 1/0 or 2/ a day, which is what the planters are paying. Hundreds o! them are only too willing to work on plantations if paid a reasonable wage. !N T ow that things have improved, the planters, who have always had everything their own way, shoull lie made to pay better wages and employ local labour. So far the planting industry has been carried on mostly for the benefit of the ]ilanters themselves and the imported coolies: now is time to justify its existence by providing work for the indigenous people and the local-born Europeans whose increasing numbers has outgrown the demand in trade and commerce and is daily becoming a problem to the Administration.
