CARDRONA NOTES.
[FROM AN OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT.] On Thursday morning, at an early hour, the peaceful inhabitants of Upper Cardrona township were greatly disturbed by the antics of a mad Chinaman named Ah Foon. He flourished a breach-loading carbine on the hill side, behind the store and post office of Messrs M'Domjall and Sons —a very commanding position to practise on any target in the shape of any human beings who might present themselves. As he was known to bo a very fair shot, and as he was frequently seen levelling it at a certain house, of course something had to be done, and Mr 0. Oallaghan, waggoner for Mr M'Dougall, pluckily summoned courage to advance to him in the chance of receiving a bullet through him for his pains. He managed to get up to him without the dreaded rifle going off. while he coaxed the Chinaman till he got hold of it. He then quickly took possession of it and found that it had a bullet cartridge in it (already thingyed), which he soon took out, affording relief to people on the flat. The Hydraulic tributers then undertook to keep charge of Ah Foon till the police came. He had no less than 10 or 11 bullet cartridges in his possession, which they took from him. It appears his madness took the form of shooting his countrymen, which he most assuredly would have done had he met any.
I think too much praise cannot be given to Mr Oallaghan for his pluck, and he is just as deserving of a medal or some recognition equally as much as if what he did had been done in a town.
This is the second Chinaman who has gone mad on Cardrona in one week. Pity they were not in Ohiua to fight the Japs. CARDRONA NOTES.
