The following letter appears (from Mr. Monckton Synnot) in a lato issue of tho Melbourne Argus, and will probably be read with interest:— As well hang a dog as give him a bad name. It seems rather hard on the Chinese that a section of the Press should persistently hold them up to public execration, and condemn them as a body for secret practices of which it is very doubtful, if they are guilty. An article charging them with all manner of evil, lately published in one of the weekly papers, lias gone the round of the colony. It is read by thousands, believed by many, and, remaining uncontradicted, becomes a text for reference for future attacks. The chief objection to the Chinese as colonists is, that they are simply sojournerafora time that they come with a fixed intention to return to their own country as soon as they have got enough to establish themselves comfortably at home. paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZH18750608.2.17&cl=search&srpos=76&e=-------100-NZH-1----0chinaman+auckland--&st=1
