The Year of the Rabbit - start of CNY in Auckland 2011. ACCC has celebrated this for a number of years, at Greenlane. For the last 20 years the Auckland Chinese Community Centre Inc has been organising the annual Chinese New Year celebration. Over the years it has now become a highlight of the Auckland summer events calendar attended by more than 20,000 people.
This year the festival has moved to Halls 3 & 4 of the ASB Showgrounds. “With the improved lighting and fit-out, together with the partnership with Chinese Freeview station, TV33,” says Kai Luey, Event Organiser, “there will definitely be a even larger attendance this year!”
“We are excited to be part of this event”, says Timer Zheng, Chief Operating Officer of TV33. “TV33 is a member of the Freeview Group, a free-to-air channel specifically targeting the Chinese market in New Zealand.” “One of our objectives is to facilitate and foster a greater understanding between the New Zealand-Chinese community and the New Zealand public,” continues Zheng. “And the festival gives us an opportunity to do so.”
“We are ecstatic to have the ongoing support from the Governor-General and the Prime Minister,” says Kai. “They will open the event for us and their presence will affirm the importance of the Chinese community in Auckland.”
We have a variety of stalls selling traditional and exotic food, Chinese New Year foodstuffs, arts and crafts, as well as a very exciting programme. This year we have Willie Ying of Dragon Origin. His team will be performing contemporary martial arts which includes wiring and rigging, and drama.
We also have JJ Fong, a New Zealand born Chinese performing artist, breaking into the New Zealand music industry scene. She is currently recording new songs, and choreographing new shows for 2011, and will be part of the musical Miss Saigon at the Civic in June 2011. Other performances include taichi, taekwondo and hip-hop.
This festival could only be made possible with the support from Skycity Auckland, ANZ National Bank, Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust, Multi-Media Systems Ltd, Cathay Pacific, AsiaWorks, KVB Kunlun, and other supporters and sponsors.
The Chinese New Year officially starts on the 3rd February 2011.
