DEBBIE WONG Ngati Ranginui
Debbie Lee Wong from Rangitoto College in Auckland was named as the top all-round Female M¨¡ori Scholar for 2002. She achieved an overall Bursary score of 419, with her top three grades being in History (93%), English (90%) and Classics (89%). She also sat Bursaries Economics and Statistics.
Debbie is currently studying for a BA /LLB double degree at Victoria University in Wellington and she hopes to be a lawyer. Her mother Lois, who is a teacher, believes Debbie achieved her outstanding Bursaries results by being very self-motivated.
"She obviously has a lot of natural ability and she is a good logical thinker. I think she has excelled because she is very organised and disciplined about her studies."
The Wong family has a lot to be proud of. Debbie's older sister, Kiri, won the Top Female M¨¡ori Bursaries Scholar in 1994. Her father, Dave Wong, says it is an excellent achievement for the family. Like Debbie, Kiri chose to study law and is now working for a legal publishing firm.
Debbie's M¨¡ori-Chinese whakapapa comes from her father. His parents, Doong Lun Wong and Sylvia Piahana met when Doong Lun migrated from mainland China to work in the market gardens around the Tauranga district. The Piahana whanau are from Huria marae on the Tauranga Moana waterfront. Dave hopes his daughter, like her older siblings, will develop a stronger interest in taha M¨¡ori from her time at university.
